上記の表を見てわかるとおり、イギリスとアメリカ英語の語彙が違うだけではなく、日本語もイギリスとアメリカ英語の両方から由来した言葉（アクセルはイギリス英語の ‘accelerator’、サイドミラーはアメリカ英語の ‘side mirror’）が使われています。

 

下記の車の図を見てみましょう。車の各部分の名称がイギリス英語およびアメリカ英語でリストされています。各名称をそれぞれ正しい箇所に当てはめてみましょう。

イギリス英語とアメリカ英語の違いは車の部品のみならず、運転に関わる語彙にも多くあります。例えば高速道路は、イギリス英語では ‘motorway’ ですが、アメリカ英語では ‘highway’ です。さらにイギリスではガソリンのことを ‘petrol’、アメリカでは ‘gas’ と言います。

以下は、運転に関する語彙を使った例文です。テキストボックスに記載されている単語を使って、イギリス英語で作成されている文章はアメリカ英語に、アメリカ英語で作成されている文章はイギリス英語に直していみてください。答えは、次のコラムで発表します。

         あのトラックのそばを通るときは気をつけて。

     4) The new fly-over will open next year. (イギリス)

         The new _______ will open next year. (アメリカ)

         来年、新しい高架道路が開通します。

     5) Excuse me, could you tell me where the nearest car park is please? (イギリス)

         Excuse me, could you tell me where the nearest _______ ____ is please? (アメリカ)

         すみません、ここから一番近い駐車場はどこですか？

Differences Between British and American Vocabulary 1- Parts of a Car & On the Road

 

If you were asked ‘Could you put these bags in the boot for me?’ would you know what were asked to do? If you were British or have studied British English, it’s clear that the meaning here is to put some bags in the back part of the car. 

This is one of example where even native speakers may have trouble in communicating due to differences in vocabulary. 

The differences don’t end with ‘boot’. (Japanese uses the American English work ‘trunk.’) 

Here are some more vocabulary differences for parts of the car between British and American English.

 

So you can see from just a few examples that there are not only differences between the UK and US but also that Japanese itself has imported words for the car from both British English and American English, notably アクセル from ‘accelerator’ and サイドミラー directly from American English.

Keeping with the car theme, there are also several differences with regard to the road itself.

For example if you want to drive at 70 miles per hour in the UK, you would use a ‘motorway’ whereas in the US you would use a ‘highway’ or a ‘freeway.’

If you were low on fuel you would top up your tank of petrol at the petrol station in the UK whereas in the US you would fill up your tank with gas at the gas station.
