前置詞をつけて他動詞とみなすから、受身にしたときも必ず前置詞をつけておく
His friend laughed at him. 彼の友人は彼を嘲笑した。
He was laughed at by his friend. 彼は自分の友人に嘲笑された。
類例：
send for（呼びにやる） look after（世話をする） run over（[車などが]轢く）
hear of（消息を聞く） speak to （話しかける） call for （助けを求める）
4.1.2 自動詞＋副詞＋前置詞＝他動詞
副詞と前置詞をつけて他動詞とみなすから、受動態も必ず副詞と前置詞をつけておく
The villagers looked down upon them.村の人たちはかれらを軽蔑した。
They were looked down upon by the villagers.かれらは村の人たちに軽蔑された。
類例：think well of（よく思う） do away with（除く） look forward to（待ち望む）
4.2 他動詞 他動詞＋名詞＋前置詞＝他動詞
4.2.1 前置詞の目的語が受動態の主語になるもの
The detective lost sight of the suspect in the crowd. 探偵は人ごみの中で容疑者を見失った。
類例：
make fun of （からかう） catch sight of （見つける）
make a fool of （ばかにする） make head or tail of（理解する）
make nothing of（ものともしない） make much of （重大視する、ちやほやする）
get rid of （取り除く）
4.2.2 他動詞の目的語が受動態の主語になるもの
We must make allowances for his financial difficulties.
彼が財政的に困っていることを考慮してやらなければならない。
⇒Allowances must be made for his financial difficulties by us.
類例：
bring a charge of（訴える） keep an eye on （見張る）
put stress on （強調する） take an interest in （興味を持つ）
take pride in （自慢する） turn a deaf ear to （耳を貸さない）
find fault with （あらさがしをする） put use to （利用する）
4.2.3 詞句の動詞の目的語および前置詞の目的語が受動態になるもの
The boy took little notice of my advice. その少年は私の警告をあまり心に留めなかった。
⇒My advice was taken little notice of [by the boy].
⇒Little notice was taken of my advice [by the boy].
私の警告はあまり心に留められなかった。
We took good care of the child. 私たちはその子供を十分に世話した。
⇒The child was taken good care of.その子供は十分に世話された。
類型：
pay attention to（注意する） make room for（席を空ける）
take advantage of （利用する） make a mess of（台無しにする）
make fuss over （ちやほやする） make an end of（終止符を打つ）
make mention of （言う） see much of （よく会う）
lay emphasis on （強調する） make mention of （言及する）
