1.1 疑問代名詞の種類
疑問代名詞は、平叙文の主語・目的語・補語を尋ねるのに使われる。

目的格whomは前置詞を前に置く以外、使われない。
1.2 疑問代名詞のある疑問文の作り方
1.2.1 主語を疑問詞にする場合 S+V
疑問詞を文頭に置いて、述部をそのまま続ける
① Who 人の場合
Tom comes from Birmingham トムがバーミンガム出身です。
↓
Who comes from Birmingham? 誰がバーミンガム出身ですか？
誤Who does come from Birmingham? 但し強調の時、ありうる。
② What 物の場合
A dangerous thing happened to him. 危険なことが彼の身に起こった。
↓
What happened to him? 何が彼の身に起こりましたか。
誤 What did happen to him? 但し強調の時、ありうる。
Which one costs more - the blue one or the gray one?
どちらがより金がかかりますかー青いのですか、それとも灰色のですか。
誤 Which does cost more ? 但し強調の時、ありうる。
③ Whose 所有格の場合
Mine is there. 私のはあそこにあります。

【重要】疑問代名詞が主語になる時、通常単数動詞で受ける
Who’s there? あそこにいるのは誰でしょうか。

1.2.2 第２文型の疑問詞の疑問文 S+V+C
① what 主格補語が事の場合
The fact is that her husband killed her. 彼女の夫が彼女を殺したのは事実です。
Is the fact that her husband killed her? 彼女の夫が彼女を殺したのは事実ですか？

② who 主格補語が人の場合
The murderer is ‘Okubo Kiyoshi’.

③ which 選択する場合
My wife is the one in the red dress. Not in the white.

④ whose 主格補語が所有格の場合
This car is Tom’s.

但し、Whose car is this? の方が好まれます。
1.2.3 第３文型の疑問詞の疑問文 S+V+O
作り方：yes, noで答える疑問文 Is(are) 主語～?、 Do(Does, Did) 主語～? にして、
疑問詞を前にする。
① what 目的語が物の場合
Mark is cooking vegetables in the kitchen now.

What
What is Mark cooking in the kitchen nowマークは今、台所で何を作っているの？
② who 目的語が人の場合
The murder killed her.
↓

Who did the murderer kill? 殺人は誰を殺しましたか？
③ which 選択する場合
My wife likes sushi better than beef steak.

お寿司かステーキか奥さんはどちらが好きですか？
④ whose 目的語が所有格を伴う場合

Whose is this car? It is Tom’s. この車は誰のですか。トムのです。
但し、Whose car is this? の方が好まれます。

作り方：yes, noで答える疑問文 Is(are) 主語～?、 Do(Does, Did) 主語～? にして、
疑問詞を前にする。
Richard gave Tom a CD as a birthday present.
① 目的語が人の場合
Did Richard give Tom a CD as a birthday present?

② 目的語が物の場合

1.2.5 目的格補語が疑問詞の疑問文 S+V+O+C
They call this flower a ‘rose’ in English. 英語でこの花をバラと呼びます。

1.2.6 疑問詞が前置詞の目的語になる場合
① 前置詞＋疑問詞：公式表現
With whom did you go to the movie? 誰と映画に行ったの。
② 前置詞を文尾に置く：くだけた表現
Who did you go to the movie with?
③ 動詞がbe動詞の時は公式表現でも前置詞を前に置かない。
Who is it for, madam? (NOT For whom is it?) それは誰のためですか、奥様。
1.2.7 動詞をたずねる疑問文: what ･… do?
‘What are you doing tomorrow? ‘ ‘Resting.’ 「明日は何をするつもり。」「休息を取るよ。」
‘What’s Helen doing?’ ‘Getting all the rubbish (Am. Trash) out of the car.’
「ヘレンは何をしているの。」「車からすべてのゴミを出しているよ。」
他動詞をたずねる疑問文で、主語と目的語が両方言われるとき：what…with, to
‘What have you done to your leg?’ ‘(I have )Broken it.’ 「君の足どうしたの。」「折っちゃった。」
’What are you doing with my camera?’ ‘I’m just touching it.’
「私のカメラに何してんの。」「ただ、さわっているだけだよ。」
完全な情報を聞きたいとき：what…happen
’What happened to that chair?’ ‘My cat scratched it.’ 「この椅子どうしたの。」「猫が引掻いたの。」
1.2.8 形容詞をたずねる疑問文：what…like? どんな風か、どんな人か
‘What is he like?’ ‘He is handsome.’ 「彼はどんな人。」「いい男よ。」
’What does your sister look like?’ ‘Short and dark, pretty; very cheerful looking.’
「君の妹ってどんな人。」「背が低くて、色黒で、かわいくて、陽気だよ。」
注）What ~ like?とHow ~?の違い
What ~ like?: 変化しないものを聞く ex) 人の性格・容姿
How ~ ? : 変化するものを聞く ex) 人の健康・気分
’How is Ron?’ ‘He is very well.’ 「ロンはどうですか。」「彼とても調子いいよ。」
’How does she look today?’ ‘Tired.’ 「彼女は今日どのように見える。」「疲れて見えるよ。」

1.3 whatとwhoとwhichの違い
who: 姓名、素性、血族、関係など
what: 職業、役割、地位、身分
which: 通常人には使わないが、人の確認をする時は使う
Who is he? He is Mr. Smith. He is my uncle. He is my teacher.
彼はなんという人ですか。 スミスさんです。 私の伯父です。 私の先生です。
(名前を尋ねる場合は、May I have your name?が普通。また、What’s your name, please?
でもよい。）
例外）’Who are you?’ ‘I’m a photojournalist.’ 「どなた。」「報道写真家です。」
Who are you really and what were you before?
君は本当に何物なんだ？ また、前は何をやっていたんだ。
What is he? He is a teacher. He is president.
彼はどういう人ですか。 先生です。 大統領です。
（職業を尋ねるには、What do you do? やWhat is your occupation?などの表現を用いる
ほうがはっきりしてよい。）
例外
Who are you that you call me by my first name? (古い言い回し)
ちゃん付けで私を呼ぶなんてあなたってどういう人。
"Which one is your husband?" "The one in jeans."
「どちらがあなたの亭主。」「ジーンズをはいているほうよ。」
1.4 whatを含む慣用表現
1.4.1 What about ~? = How about ~? (こちらの方が一般的)
= What do you say to(前置詞) ? = Let’s ~.～しませんか（提案、勧誘）
What about going out for a meal? 外食するのはいかがですか。
1.4.2 What if ~? 提案を導くのに使われる 「どうなんだ」
if以下は現在形・過去形（可能性が薄い時、一種の仮定法）
What if we invite your mother next weekend and have her go back the week after?
私たちが君の母君を来週末招待して翌週帰ってもらったらどうでしょう。
" I’m going to climb up there." "No! What if you slipped?" (仮定法)
「私はあそこに登るつもりなんだ。」「止めろ！滑ったらどうするんだ。」
注）what if はsuppose, supposingに置きかえられる。

1.4.4 What makes 人＋動詞原形~? = Why ~? 何が人をそうさせるのか
