6.1.1 修飾語がつかない場合：a+単数普通名詞

I have lost my camera; I think I must buy one(=a camera).
私はカメラをなくしてしまった。一台買わなければならない。
※この用法では、複数のonesは用いられず、they[them]が用いられる。
Do you like apples? -------Yes, I like them(=apples).
りんごは好きですか。ええ、好きです。
※oneとit 不特定のものを受けるにはoneを用いるが、特定のもの（一般に〈the[人称代名詞の所有格など]+単数名詞〉で表される?うなもの）はitで受ける
I bought a good camera. I’ll lend it(=the camera) to you.
私はいいカメラを買いました。 それをあなたに貸しましょう。
※ 不特定の不可算名詞はsomeで受ける
Shall I get the butter? Or have you got some already?
バターをとりましょうか。それとももうおありですか。
6.1.2 修飾語がつく場合 冠詞[this, that, which, what]＋形容詞＋one(s)
This dictionary is thicker than that one. この辞書はあの辞書より厚い。
This watch is no good; I must buy a new one.
この時計はだめだ。新しいのを買わなくちゃ。
I want some roses—red and white ones (=roses). バラが欲しい。赤と白のバラが。
What nice shirts! Which one [ones] shall we buy?
なんていいワイシャツだ！ どれを買おうか。
6.1.3 修飾語がついてもoneを用いることができない場合
不可算名詞をさすことができない。
× He likes white wine better than red one.
He likes white wine better than red (wine). 彼は赤ワインより白ワインのほうが好き
人称代名詞や名詞の所有格(特にownを伴うとき)および基数詞の後では用いられない。
× He has three rabbits and I have only two ones.
He has three rabbits and I have only two.
彼はウサギを３羽飼っているが、私は2羽だけだ
6.2 一般の人を表すone
6.2.1 単独で使われるone

6.3 oneを含む慣用表現
One of these days is none of these days. 《諺》いずれそのうちは、いつになっても来ない
They left by ones and twos. 彼らは1人、２人ずつぽつりぽつりと去った。
They left the room one by one. 彼らは１人ずつ部屋を出て行った。

6.4 other:「ほかの（人・もの）」 複数形 others 「他人、他のもの」
another = an + other 常に不特定の「もう１つの別の（物・人）」
特定のものを表すには定冠詞[the]をつけ、不特定のものを表すときは冠詞をつけない。
othersは無冠詞で用いられると，《他人》を表すことが多い。
I don’t like these; show me some others.こちらのは気にいらない。別のいくつかを見せてくれ。
I don’t like this one; show me another. これは気に入らない。ほかの１つを見せてくれ。
Be kind to others. 他人に親切にしなさい。
形容詞用法・副詞用法
I have other things to do. [形容詞] 私はほかにすることがある。
I could not do other (=otherwise) than obey him. [副詞] 彼に従うしかなかった。
Have another piece. [形容詞] もう一切れ召し上がれ。
6.4.1 one…..the other : ２つあるうちの１つ 残りの１つ
I have two brothers; one lives in Tokyo and the other in Kobe.
私には２人の兄がいます。１人は東京に、もう１人は神戸におります。
6.4.2 one[some]….the others: 多くのうちの１つ[いくつか] ほかの全部
I have three brothers; one lives in Tokyo and [all] the others in Kobe.
私には３人の兄がいます。１人は東京に、ほかの２人は神戸におります。

その男の子のうち何人かはここにいますが、そのほかの子はどこですか。

To know is one thing, and to teach (is) quite another.
知っていることと教えることは別のことだ。
= To know and to teach are two quite different things.
The horse thinks one thing, and he that saddles him another. 《諺》
馬はあるふうに考え、その馬に乗る者は別のことを思う。同床異夢（どうしょういむ）
同じ寝床に寝た人が、それぞれ違う夢を見ることから、一つのことを共にしていても、考え方や思惑が違うことをいう。
6.5.4 one after the other「次々に」（２者以上について）
