8.1 all （形容詞的用法 形容詞１２－８副詞的用法 副詞４－４－５参照）
8.1.1 人を表すとき；複数扱い ( = all people) すべての人
All were frightened. 全員がギョッとした。
All [men] die sooner or later. すべて人はおそかれ早かれ死ぬものだ。
※ all of の後は原則として冠詞(相当語)がつく all of the [my, these…]
All of the villagers knew of the accident. 村の人々はみなその事故のことを知っていた。
8.1.2 物・事を受けるときは単数扱い (=everything) すべてのこと（もの）
All that glitters is not gold. 《諺》 光るものかならずしも金とは限らない。
All is well that ends well. 《諺》 終わりよければすべてよし。
All is over. すべては終わった。
All you have to do is (to) write it down. それを書き取るだけで良い。
All he said was true. 彼の言ったことはすべて本当だ。
8.1.3 allの否定
allをnotと供に用いると「みなが～とは限らない」と部分否定になり、これを全部否定
にするにはnot～any、noneを用いる。
I don’t know all of them. 彼らを全部知っているわけではない。《部分否定》
I know none of them. 彼らを全部知らない。《全部否定》
I don’t know any of them. 彼らをまったく知らない。《全部否定》
8.1 4 allを含む慣用表現
① He ate the fish, bones and all. 彼はその魚を骨ごと食べた。
② All (that) you have to do is (to) wait for her. 彼女を待ってさえいればよい。
③ All (that) we can do is (to) wait for him. 彼を待つより仕方がない．
④ at all
否定文：She was not at all upset by the news.
彼女は知らせを聞いても少しも驚かなかった。
疑問文：Why do you have to go at all? 一体どうして行かなくちゃならないんだ。
条件文：It snows here very rarely, if at all.
当地では、とにかく雪が降るにしても大変まれだ。
肯定文： I was surprised that she succeeded at all.
私は彼女がとにかくうまくやったのには驚いた。

8.2 bothの用法
8.2.1 二者のうち両方ともの意味で、つねに複数で用いられる。
Both (the) girls smiled. [形容詞] ※ both冠詞（this, that）＋名詞
Both of the girls smiled. [代名詞] その女の子達は2人ともにっこりした。
The girls both smiled. [代名詞で同格]
There are trees on both sides of the street. [形容詞] 道の両側には木がある。
Both of my parents were invited to the party. [代名詞] 両親の両方がパーティーに招待された。
8.2.2 bothの否定
① bothの部分否定
bothをnotとともに用いると「両方とも～というわけでない」と、部分否定を表す。
I don’t know both of his sisters.
彼の姉妹を両方とも知っているわけではない。《部分否定》
② bothの全部否定
bothを全部否定にするには、not～either、neitherを用いる。
I don’t know either of his sisters. 彼の姉妹を両方とも知らない。《全部否定》
= I know neither of his sisters.
each、everyの用法
8.3 each, every
8.3.1 eachの用法
２つ[２人]以上のもの[人]について[それぞれ][めいめい][おのおの]の意味で個別的に表し、
原則として単数扱いされる。代名詞、形容詞、副詞の役割がある。
Each of the girls (Each girl) has her own piano.
少女達は１人１人めいめいにピアノを持っている。
On each side of the street there were cherry blossoms. 通りの両側に桜の木があった。
8.3.2 everyの用法
everyは３つ[３人]以上のもの[人]について「すべての～」「～はどれもみな」の意味で、
全体を個体の集まりとして表す。形容詞用法しかなく、原則として単数扱いされる。
Every man must do his duty. 人はすべて自分の義務を果たさねばならない。
Every dog has his day. 《諺》
どの犬にも全盛期はある。＝誰にでも一度は幸運が巡ってくる。
〈every＋抽象名詞〉可能な限りの～、十分な～、ありとあらゆる～
We have every reason to believe that he did it.
彼がそれをしたと信じるだけの十分な理由がある。
She showed me every kindness. 彼女は私にありとあらゆる親切を示してくれた。
every day 毎日 every other week 隔週に every four years ４年ごとに
8.3.3 each、everyを受ける代名詞
each、everyのついた単数名詞を口語では非公式だが複数代名詞で受けることが多い。
Every girl wants to talk with their teacher. 女の子はみな自分の先生と話したがっている。
Each of us was willing to pay our fares. 私達はめいめい進んで料金を払いました。
either、neitherの用法
8.4 either、neitherの代名詞的用法と形容詞的用法
8.4.1 either 「どちらか」 単数扱い
Either of the two answers will do.[代名詞] その２つの答えのうちどちらでもよろしい。
注：３つ以上のものについてはanyを用いる。
Any of the three answers will do. [代名詞] その３つの答えのうちどれでもよろしい。
He can write with either hand. [形容詞] 彼はどちらの手でも書ける。
There are stores on either side of the street. [形容詞] 通りの両側に店が並んでいる。
8.4.2 neither 「どちらも～でない」 単数扱い
neitherはbothの否定である。[全部否定]
I like both of them. → I don’t like either of them./ I like neither of them.
I made two propositions, and neither was accepted.[代名詞]
２つの提案をしたがどちらも受け入れられなかった。
Both of his parents are abroad. = Neither of his parents are at home.
8.4.3 either、neitherの副詞用法
① not～either ～も（ない）
I didn’t go to the party, and Jack didn’t either.
私はパーティーに行かなかったしジャックも行かなかった。
⓶ neither＋be[助]動詞＋主語 …もまた～ない
I am not rich, (and) neither do I wish to be. 私は金持ちでないし、なりたくもない。
③ none （副詞的用法 副詞4-4-4参照）
「みな…でない」と全部否定を表し、可算/不可算名詞とも普通は単数扱いだが、人に関しては複数の時もあるが、その場合は非公式な表現となる。
8.5 noneの用法
8.5.1 何も～ない、誰も～ない
Is there any oil in the container? No, there is none(=no oil).[不可算名詞]
容器にオイルが入っていますか。 いいえ、ありません。
注：noneの代わりにnothingは入れられない。nothingは他のものも含めて「何もない」
という意味で、オイルがあるかないかと聞いているのだから、noneでないといけない。
None of the books here were useful. [可算名詞]
ここの本のどれも役に立たなかった。
None of my friends live near here. [人]
私の友人は誰もこの近くに住んでいない。
8.5.2 noneとno one: noneは「そのような人は誰も～ない。」
no oneは｢誰も～ない｣の意味で人にのみ使い、単数扱い。
No one was punished. 誰も罰せられなかった。
There were none present. 誰も出席者はなかった。
No one knows where she has gone. 誰も彼女がどこに行ってしまったか知らない。
8.5.3 none of～：～はよせ：好ましくない意味で使われる
None of your lies! うそをつくのはよせ。
None of your tricks. ごまかしはよせ。
8.5.4 noneを含む慣用表現
It’s none of your business. お前の知ったことではない。
It’s none other than Tom! 誰かと思ったらほかならないトムだ。
He knew the fact, but none-the-less he didn’t tell me.
彼は事実を知っているが、でも私には言わなかった。
He is second-to-none in arm wrestling. 彼は腕ずもうではだれにも劣らない。
None but the brave deserve(s) the fair. 《諺》 [人・独立用法]勇者以外は美人を得るに値せず。
