8.1.2 20, 30, 40, 50, 60, 70, 80, 90 : yをieに変えthをつける

8.1.4 21～29、31～39、41～49、－－－は1～9の序数を20、30、40…の基数詞にハイフン（－）をつける 56

8.2 序数詞の用法
8.2.1 形容詞的用法と名詞的用法の場合は、一般にはtheをつける
形容詞的用法 September is the ninth month of the year. ９月は年の９番目の月です。
名詞的用法 He was the first to arrive here. 彼がここに一番早く着いた。
8.2.2 theをつけない場合はもう１つの(another)という意味で不特定のものを表す時にはaをつける
She made a second attempt to succeed in the test. 彼女はもう一度テストに合格する試みをした。
8.2.3 副詞的用法に用いられる
I first met him in Paris. 私は彼にパリで初めて会った。
= I met him in Paris for the first time.
He came second in the race.彼はその競争で２着に入った。
8.2.4 序数詞を用いた慣用表現
＊the + 序数 + 最上級 何番目に～な
This is the second largest building in this city. これがこの町で２番目に大きな建物です。
＊second to none 誰にも引けを取らない
In mathematics he is second to none. 数学においては、彼は誰にも劣らない。
＊every 序数 + 単数名詞 ～ごとに
He goes to his office every third day. = (every three days) 彼は３日ごとに会社に行く。
＊a second chance もう一度のチャンス
I just want to give these kids a second chance. この子供たちにもう一度チャンスを上げたいだけだ。
＊Have second thoughts もう一度考え直す。
You’re not having second thoughts, are you? 君は、もう一度考え直していないよね。
＊On second thoughts/thought: 考え直す、よく考えて、やっぱり
I’ll call her tomorrow – no, on second thought, I’ll try now.
彼女に明日電話しよう。いや、やっぱり、今かけよう。
